in silver dinnerware? But, cleaning and maintaining silverware
is quite a wearisome process. Often times, silver get stained and
tarnished with use and by not using it at all. And then, you need to
run to the local grocery store to get your dinnerware clean and
polished. Not any more though.
We have some easy silver cleaning hacks
to share with you. With these easy hacks, you can clean all your
silver utensils at home in no time without going to the grocery
store. Take a trip to your kitchen and you will find all the
ingredients used for cleaning the silver dinnerware there.
Here are the easy hacks to clean and maintain silver:
Baking Soda Bath
Baking soda is easily available in
every kitchen. You can use it to clean even the highly-corroded
silverware within minutes.
You would need:
- Aluminium foil
- Aluminium baking dish/ disposable aluminium container or a glass dish
- One cup of boiling water
- One tablespoon baking soda
- One teaspoon sea salt
- Half cup of white vinegar
- A clean cloth
Take an aluminium container or dish and
place the silverware in a single layer. If you are using a glass
dish, line the inner side of the dish with aluminium foil and then
place the items. Now, sprinkle a layer of baking soda and sea salt
over the items.
Now boil a cup of water and pour it
over the silver items along with vinegar. Let the items get submerged
completely. Leave it for five minutes. The utensils generally get
cleaned in 30 seconds but if the dinnerware is highly tarnished, you
need to leave the items for five minutes. Using vinegar will speed up
the process by manifolds.
A reaction will take place that will
remove sulphur dioxide from the silver leaving the items clean and
shiny. Use a tong to remove the silverware and clean the items with a
cloth to remove remaining spots. Use the rag to buff vigorously.
Clean larger items like trays and plates using circular motions.
Clean long items like knives with vertical, up and down motion. Use
q-tips to clean grooves.
Note: As the process causes
chemical reactions, a strange smell can bother you. Henceforth, you
must carry this cleaning spree in a well-ventilated room. Plus, if
you are using gloves, you must refrain from using rubber gloves as
they may cause corrosion. Use cotton or plastic gloves for this
purpose.
Banana
While disposing of the banana peels,
have you ever thought that they can be used for good? Well, this
waste can be used for your best interest.
Banana peel is a great hack to clean
silver dinnerware. Though it is not the preferred method to
clean large dishware, you can clean lightly tarnished silver cutlery
with this method.
You would need:
- Banana peel
- Water
- Blender
- A piece of cloth
Take some banana peels and blend them
in a blender with a little water. Make a paste. Now, using a
toothbrush or a soft cloth, scrub the piece with the paste. Dip the
item into the water bath and clean the remaining paste.
Pat dry the silver item using a clean
cloth.
Tomato ketchup
Tomato ketchup that we use daily is a
great hack to clean silver utensils. It can be used to clean the
largest silver rice plate that you bought from a plush store, the
small silver bowl online, and the silver tea set gifted by
your dearest friend.
The acid present in the tomatoes helps
in cleaning the tarnished silver dinnerware.
You would need:
- Tomato ketchup
- Dish
- Rag
To clean the silverware, take a dish
and pour some tomato ketchup into it. Place the silver item into it.
The silver item should be totally submerged into the ketchup. Let it
stay for five to ten minutes. Now, remove it and thoroughly rinse it
with warm water. Buff the silver item with a rag. Viola! The stains
are gone.
Toothpaste
Your toothpaste doesn’t just clean
your teeth but also your silver utensils. It removes tarnish from
your silver utensils just the way it cleans stubborn plaque from your
teeth.
You would need:
- Toothpaste (Do not use a gel toothpaste)
- Old toothbrush
Take the silverware and apply some
toothpaste on it. Now, add some water to your brush and scrub it over
the silver piece. If the silver item is heavily tarnished, let the
paste sit for two to three minutes and finally, rinse it thoroughly
with water.
Dry it with a clean cloth.
If the silverware is heavily tarnished,
you may need to repeat the processes more than once. Otherwise,
gentle cleaning with any of the above-mentioned hacks will clean the
silverware.
How to maintain the silver dinnerware?
If you use the
silver dinnerware frequently, it is less likely to get corroded.
After every use, all you need to do is to wash it with mild,
non-abrasive dish soap. Make sure the dish soap is free from the
lemon as lemon can cause staining of the silverware. Dry the
dinnerware with a clean cloth.
Always keep the silverware away from
moisture.
